toast project page
toast stands for 'the open accounting software: toast'
update 2002-10-25there is now a group called gnu enterprise which is offering free software to tackle this very problem. it's located here. i'm not sure how it can be retooled to provide complete transparency, but i'm sure it's possible, as it is a gnu project. toast is therefore being shuttered.
toast is a means to an end, an free software accounting program that has at its back a theory from which its strength is derived: open, complete transparency. from the interface down to the tiniest detail to the reports it generates, toast prizes openness above all. rather than obscure items considered sacrosanct, like payroll, bonuses, etc. toast reveals everything so that irregularities can be caught quickly , graft and corruption prevented, and competition increased. you say that your competitors will eat you alive? we say that if accounting gimmicks and one-time losses are the only reason you are competitive, that you deserve to fail. rather than rely upon stock options and undocumented golden parachutes to spur employees, toast helps companies rely upon the simple faith of the free market: if we offer a quality product at a competitive price, our company will succeed.
