My aim was to make my color brick red, and to subsequently feel more gleeful about posting. We'll see...the color selector made it difficult for me to fine-tune my choice. A big wahoo for Ed, though, for giving us each a shot at individuality, even though he mocks the concept. Oh, yeah, and I am a beautiful and unique snowflake.

I swear.

The backend is currently dog-ugly, but I don't have time to mess with it right now. On the plus side, I have been able to implement the new staff section so you can check out the results.

For all of you who haven't altered your description/image/color, please do so! It takes just a second to do and it will result in a great feeling afterwords. As I mentioned, the author admin page is fairly ugly, but my next project will be to clean it up so that it makes more sense and has less random info lying around.

For those of you who don't have a login yet...if you want one, just ask me. There are still some kinks to work out but I'd like to thank Meat and Kevin for posting and helping me iron out the bugs.

On a political note, check out this article at TNR. And yes, Brad, I've fixed the link so anyone can see it.

This is simply disgusting.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) President Bush on Friday wished Bill Clinton ``best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery.''

``He's is in our thoughts and prayers,'' Bush said at a campaign rally.

Bush's audience of thousands in West Allis, Wis., booed. Bush did nothing to stop them.

Beyond the pale.

Markdown rocks.

Lists are super easy. For instance, I think Republicans are:

  • Mean
  • Stupid
  • Ugly

It's easy to make ordered lists too, by using numbers. For instance, I think the United States should, in order:

  1. Reduce the deficit
  2. Reduce the ranks of the uninsured.
  3. Reduce the restrictions on freedom.

See? It's so easy. Emphasis is even easier. And you can even SHOUT if you need to.

So I've made two major changes to the backend, namely, the additional of a spell-checker and the introduction of Markdown.

Spell Checker

It's simple. Just click "Check Spelling" on any page. It's a little zealous, but works well.

Markdown

Markdown is more complex. Right now, it only can be used when adding an article, not editing an article. The syntax is very easy to pickup, and the basic details are located here. Here's a more advanced look at the entire syntax.

Hopefully the introduction of these two technologies will allow guest posters to easily add articles without having to possess a full knowledge of XHTML. Here goes!

i hate to say this, but I'm writing this out of guilt.

i don't know that I've ever written anything out of guilt - so, as Morpheus said to Neo, this may feel a little...wierd.

this is my first posting of the (somewhat) world famous Salsa review. future readings may prove interesting (well, marginally) if you (like myself) often find yourself selecting a potential dining establishment based solely on the 3 things:

  1. the strength of the margarita's
  2. the possibility of free bottomless chips (always a plus in my book)
  3. the tastiness of the Salsa

granted, the first 2 are pretty important (that's why they're listed first, i suppose), but the tastiness of the Salsa is a factor i think often neglected.

having said this, let me get to my first recommended Salsa establishment: Don Lobo's Mexican Grill on M St. this little joint may not be much to look at, but believe me, the drinks are cheap, the Salsa is GREAT, and the chips are homemade (at least they we're still making them by hand when Loaf and i went several weeks ago. if they've changed to serving out-of-the-bag stuff, well, i certainly apologize for steering you wrong.) a word about the menu, though: like most Mexican restaurants, it will be hard to find anything off the beaten path. that is, each plate is basically some variant of

  • (a) lettuce,
  • (b) refried beans,
  • (c) rice, and
  • (d) meat

also, the portions tend to be a bit on the small side.

that said, the service was great. so it was pretty easy to overlook the small fajita portions Loaf and received.

in closing, give Don Lobo's a try. you probably won't be disappointed. (and if you are, have a few more Margarita's - you'll be fine in no time.)

Did you enjoy the controversy which followed Bush's statement that the war on terror couldn't be won, even though you knew it was a pretty reasonable and nuanced position? It's tempting, but reminiscent of third grade, to want to gloat that Bush said something seemingly defeatist on the Republican's featured issue. The Times did a good job today though of pointing out that claiming to prosecute a war on terror is like declaring war on violence. So in the end, it is equally incomprehensible to me that the GOP keeps bragging about the war on terror - terror being a tactic and not a group of people who are issued terror ID cards at the DMV in Peshawar - while the democrats have been unwilling to discuss the need for an understanding amongst the American people that US policy plays a role in motivating those who would become terrorists. And so presently, the intelligence community can disrupt terrorisTs (which is why the CIA has a counterterrorisT center, not a counterterrorisM center), but if US policies engender a greater use of terrorisM, then we're toast.

First of all, I'd like to thank Kevin for contributing. Hopefully more of you will jump on board and write something.

Second, about those pesky profiles for staff members...I'm busy working on a revamped staff section so things will look better very soon. If you just can't wait to see the latest progress, head over to the soon-to-be-dismantled newstaff section. Okay, back to work!

This is going to change tomorrow because of this. Nader is officially racking up defeats faster than victories, and he can only hope (at this point) to get on 36...er...35 state's ballots comprising only 1.75% of the popular vote. Check out gokeever's diary for more updates...

Salon gets the good on Bush's missing year. And this is all simply a prelude to the upcoming 60 Minutes interview with Ben Barnes....the GOP is reeling from all of this...

Zell goes crazy.

Yes, even crazier than his over-the-top "the Dems are traitors" speech. Go see it...although the video doesn't work in Firefox.

The new meme bouncing around the blogosphere this morning is that the Dems secretly inserted Zell as a mole to bring down the entire GOP convention. Remember, every good Southerner is a Democrat, even if they prattle about duels, etc.

Every single person noticed the madness.

Nail him.

Delay's not the only idiot spouting off to the press...and it looks like the Kerry campaign is fighting back hard this time, instead of taking it on the chin. Good for them. It's about time.

And really, if you can't criticize the Vietnam War, can you criticize any war that America has fought in? The only other conflict eliciting condemnation I can think of in the same ballpark would be the Spanish-American War. Yeah. But Kerry was "wrong" to criticize it. Sheesh. I, for one, think that being a good soldier does not mean one is more qualified to be President. At the same time, I think a soldier's words carry more power than a chickenhawk when it comes to criticizing the war said soldier fought in. Kerry was there. He knew first-hand what it was like. Rove's excuse during Vietnam was that he was "too busy doing politics". Yeah, right.

As I heard on 98rock the other day, I have no problem with people who were opposed to the war refusing to serve. That makes sense. If you feel something is wrong you shouldn't do it. Likewise, those who wished to serve serving are also okay. But what's hypocritical are the people who claim they "wished to serve" and yet got off through excuse after excuse, like Rove. I hope Kerry slams him on this...

So on Monday Tom Delay tells Jewish republicans in NYC for the convention "My friends, there is no Palestinian-Israeli conflict. There is only the global war on terrorism,” which makes me wonder how Jews both in Israel and the US aren't annoyed that right wing republicans are strong supporters of Israel purely to ensure they can at some later point be coverted to Christianity.

For the replay, head over here. Damn. Even Kurtz slammed them. You can bet the Daily Show will be all over this tonight...

Damn. I just read one of Will Saletan's greatest pieces summarizing what I feel about our current president. Remember when the towers fell and Bush was jetting around the midwest in his plane, avoiding coming back to DC? Heroism is often the result of circumstance and not planning. A soldier can be courageous (ie, willing to risk his life for his country) and yet still not be heroic. Hence, soldiers who jump into trenches to save comrades at great personal risk get medals, and those who do not merely serve courageously. I think the greatest lie of the past three years has been that Bush was a "hero" after September 11th. When Bill Maher commented that the terrorists were willing to die for their cause and we were not, he may have been insensitive, but his premise isn't that far off the mark. And Bush's willingness to visit ground zero is definitely not heroism. From the piece:

This is Bush's heroism? Showing up three days later, "remaining in the area," and enduring a hug?

The only moment of physical bravery any of last night's speakers could find in Bush's life was his secret trip to Iraq. "As I think about his leadership," Kerik recalled, "I think of the courage it took for our commander in chief to land on an airstrip in the dark of night, a world away, to be with our troops on Thanksgiving."

Thanksgiving? You mean, six months after we captured the airport and Bush declared victory?

And isn't "the dark of night" normally a term we use to describe the preferred arrival and departure time of people who aren't exactly overflowing with courage?

Or is Kerik pointing out the difficulty of landing a plane in the dark? Is he unaware, perhaps, that Bush wasn't flying the plane? That once again, as in Vietnam, somebody else was doing the hard part and Bush was along for the ride? That Air Force One has more security systems than any other vehicle on Earth? That Bush went to Baghdad to "be with" the troops in the same way he went to New York to "be with" the firefighters? That waiting for a safe time and place to "be with" people who have braved unsafe places at unsafe times is the difference between heroism and a photo op?

Read the whole thing. It's spot on. And overdue.

A nice update of where Nader is off or on the ballot. It looks like things are going well for us, especially now that he is off the PA ballot.

Oh, and check out David Ashe's website. If you're not sure why...you need to read the news.

As soon as I get pictures from the beach uploaded, I'll throw them on the site.

Work is super-busy, so I'll recap last week later as well. For now, I am merely happy that I understand the deal with Spacecataz. A new show would rock...

If you haven't seen the Ben Barnes video you definitely need to give it a look. Very candid and compelling. This guy needs to stump more for Kerry.

More Barnes footage is available here.

Scandalous.

Krispy Kreme doughnuts need to be made on the premises. Not brought in by bus and reglazed. I'm disappointed, although I haven't had any yet. Anyone who has ever been to the real store in Alexandria can attest that the conveyor line is an integral part of the experience.

Damn. I leave for a week and then this happens. I knew I should've opened my own store downtown.
